Insurance may or may not cover a compression garment. Many insurance companies follow Medicare’s coverage provisions. According to Medicare’s manual, compression is covered when there is a venous ulcer or a burn. Most of the time, Medicare does not cover compression for lymphedema. Other insurance companies & plans may cover lymphedema compression. For example, in the case of breast cancer, there is federal legislation requiring insurance companies, group plans & HMOs which cover mastectomies to also cover reconstruction & any complications including lymphedema. This legislation is called the Women’s Health & Cancer Rights Act. For additional information on the Women’s Health & Cancer Rights Act, visit these links:
Interestingly, despite the federal legislation, Medicare (a federal program) doesn’t cover lymphedema-associated problems in the case of breast cancer. There is legislation working to change this. To learn more about this legislation, visit: http://lymphedematreatmentact.org/.
